Classic French Art Deco demi-lune console table, circa 1927, in purple heart and satinwood, with marble top. 34" wide x 16" deep x 39.5" high.

FERNAND NATHAN

French painter, decorator, and furniture designer, Fernand Nathan, was born in Marseilles, France. Nathan was a painter before becoming active as an interior architect, and was a cabinetmaker and designer of lighting, printed fabrics, and furniture. He first showed his work (a dining room) at the 1913 Salon of the Societe des Artistes Decorateurs. From 1922 he designed simple lacquered models for La Maitrise, the decorating studio of the famous Galeries Lafayette department store in Paris. For the 1925  International Exhibition of Modern Decorative and Industrial Arts (French: Exposition internationale des arts décoratifs et industriels modernes) Nathan designed boutiques for Les Etablissements Florina and Compagnie des Perles Electriques, in both instances participating also in the interiors with furniture. In the Ambassade Francaise he participated in the decoration of the pavilion's grand salon.
